Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of May 8-10, 2015:
1. Brown Bag Lunch Lecture: “Southern Resident Killer Whales in the Salish Sea”
When: Friday, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Community Center, 370 Brien Dr. NE
Why: Your mom is going to love to hear the saga of the hometown orcas fighting against extinction. Certified marine naturalist Susan Marie Andersson will be talking about why they are in danger and what needs to be done to help them recover so that they are here for future generations to experience, like your mom’s great-grandkids.
Suggested donation of $3 supports the BILT and the West Sound Wildlife Shelter.
2. Building a Sustainable Economy (BASE) Lecture Series: The Pinchot Perspective
When: 5:30-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N.
Why: Gifford Pinchot III, Co-Founder and President Emeritus of Pinchot University, will be joined by Shevanthi Daniel-Rabkin, Lead Program Manager Center for Inclusive Entrepreneurship, Kevin Hagen, Director of Corporate Responsibility for Iron Mountain, and Libba Pinchot, Co-Founder of Pinchot University, to talk about Sustainable Business & Inclusive Entrepreneurship. I’m not sure about this one for your mom. But, if she’s super cool, then bring her along.
3. Return to the Forbidden Planet
When: Friday and Saturday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge High School, 8489 Madison Ave NE
Why: Your mom can relive her teen years with this bizarro 1950s mix of Shakespeare and sci fi.
No pre-sales. Tickets at the door. 65+ get Gold Pass free admission. Students and seniors $8 and adults $12.
4. The Drowsy Chaperone
When: Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, 3 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison
Why: Take your mom for this throwback (1928) comedy for which one might have to use the words “zany” and “madcap.” The opening night reception is Friday at 6:30 p.m.

5. Strides in Solidarity Fundraising Walk
When: Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge High School Track, 9330 NE High School Road
Why: Take your mom for a 5-mile walk to support Partners in Health, the organization that walks medical care to all parts of the globe, from Haiti to Rwanda to Navajo Land. Enjoy smooth•e and a raffle for prizes that you will not win because you never win anything but your mom will win. Read more here.

6. Plant for the Planet
When: Saturday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Where: 9453 Coppertop Loop NE
Why: Plant for the Planet is an organization looking to empower children to change their communities, region, nation, and world in response to climate change. And while you take your mom out for lunch, your kid can become a P4theP ambassador through the first-ever academy at the Boys and Girls Club of Bainbridge Island. Or you and your mom can sign up to be adult volunteers OR come back at the end to watch the kids’ presentations.

7. Artist Demo with Kamilla White
When: Saturday 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E
Why: White shows you and your mom how she creates her crow paintings, collages, and sculptures.
8. Planetarium Show “All Things Saturn”
When: Saturday 8-9:30 p.m.
Where: Ritchie Observatory, Battle Point Park, 11299 Arrow Point Drive NE
Why: Give your mom the gift of a planet. BPAA President Steve Ruhl looks at Saturn’s structure, its more than 60 moons, the rings, and their dynamic interactions.
Free to members but $2 donation suggested for nonmembers and $5 for families.
9. Nature’s Nurturers: A Celebration of Mothers
When: Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
Where: IslandWood, 4450 Blakely Avenue NE
Why: Bring your mom and the whole family to IslandWood for interpretive stations in the woods, hiking, tales of wild animal mothers, and afternoon tea complete with quiches, smoked salmon, wraps, and chocolate tortes.

10. Vineyard Tour
When: Sunday, 2-3 p.m.
Where: 8989 Day Road NE
Why: Winemaker and farmer Betsey Wittick gives you and your mom a free tour of the certified organic vineyards on Day Road. All ages welcome. The tasting room is open as well.
